Food is so amazing; it is so often the focus of our lives - whether it's a celebration or a simple meal, food can bring together friends and families while nourishing the body and soul. I love food and I love to eat so it occurred to me that I could share this love with you. Bon Appetit!

Dinner for the Loves of My Life: Recipe
Valentine's Day is here. I'm not sure why it seems to be such a lovely day - it is just an ordinary day and you are supposed to express your love daily for those you care for most. But, alas, it's February 14th and the birds were chirping, the sun was shining, and it was a glorious 58 degrees - a welcomed treat after what has seemed an endless barrage of nasty winter weather. Ahh, love is the air - indeed!
Our "Romantic (with the kids in tow) Dinner" Menu
Asian Flavored Flank Steak
Sweet Potato
Sesame Jasmine Rice Timbale
Giant (and Mini) Vanilla Cupcakes
I marinaded the flank steak for two days and it was delicious! Don't overcook the steak though - it can be tough, if done so. I love this combination with the slight hint of sesame oil infused into the sticky rice.
Asian Flavored Flank Steak
2 lbs. flank steak, scored on the back and front
3 scallions, washed and cut in half
3 garlic gloves, peeled
2/3 cup Soy Sauce
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard
1/2 cup fresh cilantro, washed and drained
Combine last 6 ingredients in a food processor and pour over the steak. Cover and refrigerate at least overnight - but up to 72 hours.
Set oven on broil and broil meat for 7 minutes on the first side and 4 minutes on the second. Be sure to allow it to rest for about 5 minutes before carving. Slice thin and serve with extra juice that pools.
Sesame-Jasmine Rice Timbale
1 cup jasmine rice
2 cups water
1 teaspoon dark sesame oil
1 tablespoon each, white and black sesame seeds
1 large scallion, sliced - green parts only
2 tablespoons butter, divided
1 1/2 tablespoons Olive oil
4 Half-cup ceramic ramekins
In a large pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil and add rice, 1 tablespoon of butter and sesame oil, mix well. Cover and simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Uncover and fluff rice - add the seeds and the scallion and remaining tablespoon of butter and mix well. Cover again, turn off heat, and allow rice to settle for 3-5 minutes.
Meanwhile, grease each of four ramekins with olive oil. Spoon - and pack - rice into the ramekins (fill completely). Turn ramekins over onto the plates and allow them to sit for 30 seconds before removing the bowl.

Christmas Brunch: Food Chatter
I was recently asked by a follower for some ideas on what to make for a holiday brunch. After thinking about it for a few days, I realize that the answer brings infinite possibilities - it all depends on what you like! I've hosted brunch on New Year's Day for the past few years and the menu remains relatively static - I rotate a few items here and there but it's great to stick with what you know and like. Here are some thoughts on a brunch I've done before - New Year's Day Brunch I and New Year's Day Brunch II
The question I received was specific to Christmas Eve brunch and since the evening usually comes full of fish ideas followed by a Christmas Day filled with oodles of food, I would offer some of the following ideas:
* Brunch for a bunch is best served buffet style - let people take what they like
* Little bites are easy to manage with a plate and few seats
* Brunch is always a festive time so add fun drinks to the mix - like Prosecco with Cassis and single raspberry or champagne (or Prosecco) and orange juice
* Try to add items to the table that require little time day-of to prepare
to start with...
Zucchini Fritters
Goat Cheese and Olive Tapenade
Figs and Melon Wrapped Prosciutto
the main event...
Baked Stuffed Shrimp
Quiche with Pancetta, Arugula and Two Cheeses
Spinach Lasagna Roll-up
Roast Beef in Red Wine
Bibb Lettuce, Craisins, Walnuts and Apples
Honey Ginger Carrots
Orzo with Chive Butter
the end result...
Melon and Blueberry Crumble
Devil's Food Cake
Chocolate Covered Strawberries

The "Big Night": Menu and Recipes
If you've never seen the movie "Big Night," my husband and I urge you to do so. Starring Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalub, it's a witty story set in the 1950s about two brothers that own an Italian restaurant. All they want to serve is authentic Italian fare but the locals only really understand spaghetti and meatballs - which drives Tony Shalub's character (the chef) crazy. As a result, their restaurant is starting to have real financial worries but they believe they're getting a second chance when they learn that Louis Prima is coming to eat there. So, as anyone would, they prepare a giant feast of Italian greats - including Timpano: a giant drum. It's a wonderful movie and after we saw it, I told my husband (who wasn't at the time) that I had to make that one time.
As the summer comes to an official close, we decided to gather our friends for an adults-only party. It was a terrific time and well worth the efforts taken over the past few days. It was our "Big Night!"
Here is the menu served -
Appetizers
* Pancetta and Rosemary Risotto Balls
* Wild Mushroom and Goat Cheese Crostini
* Bruschetta with Olive Tapenade
* Melon and Virginia Ham
* Zucchini Fritters
* Three-Meat Sliders with Asiago Cheese and Basil-Dijonaise
* Spinach Dip
* Olives
* Cheese
* Chips and Dip
Main Course
* Timpano
* Green Salad
* Tomato with Fresh Mozzarella and Basil
Dessert
* Mint Chocolate Chip - Snickerdoodle Ice Cream Sandwiches homemade ice cream
* Butterfinger Ice Cream homemade ice cream
* Chocolate Glazed Chocolate Tart
* Plum Clafouti

Easter Sunday: Menu
I know that Easter and Christmas are religious holidays but for me there is nothing better than preparing a festive meal - for the mere sake of actually eating it with friends and family you love. You know I'd say that (and have said it) about Passover or Yom Kippur, as well, don't you?
Truth be told, this year has been a tough one for our family and this holiday has sort of crept up on me. Realizing I needed to prepare and plan, I set the menu while waiting for my daughter to finish her dance class. Once home, I tweaked it a bit and the finishing touches won't actually be complete until Sunday, of course. I tried to pit fancy against tried and true so that I could ensure an "easy" time of it. So here is the plan.
* A note about the lamb: I'm making this one up as I go along so I'll be sure to give a full report on the other side of Sunday. For now, I can tell you I've put a great deal of thought into this dish and I am super excited about it, thus far.

New Year's Day: Menu
I've never been a big fan of New Year's Eve and fortunately for me, neither has my husband. We just don't seem to get all the hype. However, I'll admit that the first day of January is always exciting to us both - it seems fresh, clean and new. I like that - always grateful for a new beginning. So we welcome the new year with friends and family and we've tried to do this each year. It's been a lot of fun - everyone seems relaxed, somehow. No pressure, no gifts, just a toast to the new year ahead, some good company and lots of food.
I have found that the trick to entertaining on this day is to make very few items and make them in advance, if possible. The key is to relax and enjoy your guests. Crazy in the kitchen is soo last year!

'Twas The Night Before Christmas (Eve): Menu
I really can't believe that it's the night before Christmas Eve. I wonder where the time has gone, to be honest. It feels like just yesterday we said goodbye to our Christmas Eve guests and put away all the dishes. Hmmmmmm...oh well, the calender really did move!
This year I got to planning the menu much later than usual - seems I couldn't get control over the "to-do" list and the time got away. So instead of pouring over books and recipes, I'm going with what works and what we all like. So I am pleased with what I've come up with. It's a smaller group this year - we're 7 adults this year and only our two little ones - so I scaled back the amount of food on the menu (I tried!!) and certainly the quantity (again, I tried!!!).

Thanks Easter Bunny! Menu

Even though I didn't grow up with Easter in my house, I still love it. Throughout high school I worked in a candy store and this was, by far, the busiest holiday of the year and making up the baskets was probably the most fun I've had on a job ever. How could you not be enamoured with heat-sealing? How cool is that? And making bows for the baskets? Still a great skill I have to this day!
Naturally, the food at Easter is always terrific - ham, lamb, turkey, pasta, or brunch fare. Either way, I love it all. Of course. Very little can top Easter Candy and I was always jealous of friends who had fantastic baskets delivered to them by the Easter Bunny. Passover was a lot less exciting at my house - we had Matzoh; others had Peeps. See what I mean?
So now my children have both - Matzoh and Peeps, though not in the same sitting. I am the Bunny and I love leaving a trail of plastic eggs filled with goodies for the kids to find. This Sunday we welcome tons of family for dinner and I am looking forward to a full house.

New Year's Day: Menu
Probably I should be so tired out from Christmas Eve that I would loath the idea of having more people in the house. Yet somehow the start of a new year seems to be a perfect occasion to celebrate - new possibilities, new beginnings, endings to unhealthy attitudes and vices, etc. It's all good.
So we've invited family to join us on New Year's Day for brunch - just the right meal for the day...not too early in the morning and not too late in the evening. This meal will be served buffet style so that this hostess is not moving around so much and can enjoy company.

The Feast of Seven Fish: Menu
This Jewish girl thinks Christmas Eve is magical. When I was young we spent every Christmas Eve with family-friends. For years we went to our friends' who lived down the block. They are Italian and always made a feast of fish - from Linguine and Clam Sauce and Sauteed Flounder in lemon and butter to Scungilli Fra Diavolo. It was wonderful to walk in and smell all that and see festive lights, a gorgeous tree and tons of people. There were gifts for me and my sisters and there was Egg Nog (and non-alcoholic Egg Nog for us!) and my mother always made the same three desserts - an amazing Bouche de Noel, Tri-Color Italian cookies, and delicate fried-battered "Rosettes" dusted with powdered sugar.
Later when we were older, we went to another family-friend's house for the Eve and had lasagna, colossal shrimp cocktail and tons of champagne...it was another gorgeous night with loads of people and mounds of food.
I knew Christmas Eve was not my holiday but being part of these people's lives for the night always made me think it was a magical and romantic night.
I hope my own children will begin to see the night as I do and will revel in the friends and family who join us. For now, I know that my husband and I are building memories for them and enjoying the night ourselves, along the way.
Here is what I plan to serve this Christmas Eve. The recipes will appear in later posts.

Table for Two: Recipe
Under "normal" circumstances it can be challenging to find time for a romantic dinner for two but when you have children...it can be near impossible to find that time. So it is important that you simply make the time. To celebrate some great news my husband shared, I made a special "dinner for two" to be served after the children went to bed.
The menu was simple so that it could be done easily and quickly (our kids dupe us into more water, another story, etc. so they don't get to bed until slightly after 9pm). But this dinner was a wonderful way to celebrate and enjoy each other's company.
This menu certainly can be used to serve more than two and because it is so simple, you can actually enjoy yourself.
Dinner for Two Menu

Prosecco
Goat Cheese and Homemade Olive Tapenade Crostini

White Wine
Mozzarella di Bufala with tomato and hot peppers
- second course -
Cabernet Sauvignon

Warm Brownie cups
